From mindlessly going through life to being focussed on success

From mindlessly going through life to being focussed on successFrom mindlessly going through life to being focussed on successThe very first step I took to stop mindlessly going through life wasbelieving that some alternative for my mindless statewas indeed possible. You see, I didnt try to achieve anything with my life because I was convinced success was not possible for me.BeginI was lucky, a moment of semi-enlightenment hit meafter reading a book, and it opened my eyes to different possibilities. Dont wait for enlightenment, you may wait for the rest of your life.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreStart small daily habits that will help you to examine your attitudes and decisions. Meditate, journal, pray, read books which you normally wouldnt read that could challenge your position quo.We generally change ourselves for one of two reasons inspiration or desperation. - Jim RohnExt rapolateThe exercise that finally ignited me into action was an extrapolation of our financial situation. Instead of being mindless, I was mindful for a moment and thought how my familys life may look like in 30 years if I didnt change my ways.No matter if you use inspiration or desperation, get this feeling of urgency to escape the status quo.Set Achievable GoalsMeaning small. Meaning you believe you can reach them.Pursuing them will occupy your time while taking away time from your mindless pastimes like watching TV, YouTube, scrolling endlessly through social media or playing computer games. Define what success isfor you.For example, at the beginning, I decided to lose some weight. There was no doubt I could do this. I had already lost several pounds. It was just a matter of continuing what I had started.I also decided to practice speed reading. I platzset no output goal. I had no idea what was possible. But I knew I could practice for 10 minutes a day. BTW, I almost doubled my r eading speed in the first month.Break your goals into daily actions. The goals may be vague as long as daily action is clearly defined.Do Soul SearchingSo, I knew I need to change my life. I had no idea how to improve our financial situation, but I knew I had no choice. I set some immediate goals. And I began.Well begun is half done. This is crucial. You cannot idly wait for a meaning, goal or purpose to appear in your life. You must start your journey exactly where you are and gain momentum along the way.An object at rest tends to stay at rest and an object in motion tends to stay in motion with the same speed and in the same direction unless acted upon by an external force. - Newtons First LawOnce you are in motion, its time to do some soul searching. Why? Because you need something really inspiring to dedicate your life to it. Success for the sake success of sake doesnt cut the mustard. Everybody wants to have great relationships, be healthy, wise and wealthy. Very few actually do something to achieve those objectives. You need to switch from I wish to I desperately desire. You can find such a switch inside your soul. While creatingmy personal mission statementI went through multiple mental exercises to discover what really drives me and how I want to live my life. I found who I want to be as a whole. To my surprise, I wanted to be a writer, but there were other elements in my vision, pretty obvious, but equally or even more important to be a good husband, father, Christian, friend and so on.I put this vision into words. I started pursuing it. More doors opened. In MotionYou see, success is dynamic in its nature. Once you achieve something you start looking for more. Narrowing down to a single goal doesnt guarantee success. The goal may be too small, you will achieve it and wonder what to do next with your life. Or it may be too huge and you will get quickly discouraged.Thats why you need a vision, not a goal. Elon Musks vision is not to produce the biggest numbe r of electric cars in the world nor to provide the biggest number of houses with solar panels. They are byproducts of pursuing his big vision to put humanity on Mars. When you are mindlessly going through life detecting a life purpose is a vain pursuit. You have no clue what that means. At the beginning, you need only the motivation to start. For me, it was this overarching feeling that I needed to do something, anything, with my life. Then take action. Set small goals and start doing something. Get into motion.I needed to improve my family financial situation, but I had no clue how. So I started working on my fitness, reading skills, and spirituality. Then I discovered a passion for writing within me. That mightve been a viable source of income. Eight months after getting that idea I self-publishedmy first book. It took a few more months to receive the first real money from this side hustle. It took me six years to free my wife and myself from our day jobs. I finally have some power ov er my schedule. Now, I can think about what really drives me - changing the world for better by changing people.Little ThingsMatterIn my pursuit of success, I dont neglect the small goals. I still practice several habits I started at the very beginning.Im building a new business that has the potential to grow to 7 figures, but my writing is the centerpiece of it. Once I have that business, my influence will grow and I will be able to pursue the goals of the size of Musks dreams. But each smaller goal is a building block for the overarching vision.Start. Keep going. Modify your strategy along the way. Expand.Anyone who is trustworthy in little things is trustworthy in great anyone who is dishonest in little things is dishonest in great.Luke 16 10Each step is necessary. Begin. Take action. Get in motion. This article first appeared on Medium. You might also enjoyNew neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happyStrangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds10 lessons from jngste im bunde Franklins daily schedule that will double your productivityThe worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs10 habits of mentally strong people

Interviewing Basics for Engineers, Part 2

Interviewing Basics for Engineers, Part 2 Interviewing Basics for Engineers, Part 2 Interviewing Basics for Engineers, Part 2Part 1 of Interviewing Basics for Engineers highlighted the industry changes young engineers have to address when interviewing for a job. In part two, we look at some of the different skills employers are looking for in young job candidates.Soft Skills Matter The days of technical professionals being isolated from clients are over. Strong communication skills including oral, written, and presentation skills are critical for young engineers. It does an employer no good when clients cant understand what its staff is talking about, particularly when dealing with time sensitive and complex technical problems. Learn to summarize your work for nontechnical people and ideas in a way that will excite and engage those on the outside.Another important soft skill is the ability to work in both a team environments and individually, and to agilely move between those two a reas. Engineers often need to work on a problem by themselves and then bring that work to the larger team for additional ideas and solutions. Hiring managers look for candidates who can easily transition between those extremes with the same amount of facility, the same amount of comfort, and ultimately the same amount of success.Unfortunately, these are things that most engineers are not really taught in school, Fasano says. So if you can exhibit any kind of ability in those areas, that will help you stand out. Every engineers going to have a degree. Every engineers going to have technical knowledge. So you have to think about what you might be able to bring to the table that not every engineers going to have.Get Creative Patrick likewise recommends that engineers look outside of the technical side of the field to understand where todays best industry opportunities are. That means knowing whats going on nationally and internationally in the technical, social, and economic worlds. The bottom line is engineers cannot isolate themselves just within their expertise, he says. They need to develop that expertise, becoming extremely competent in their area of focus. They need to also be broader beyond that and think about how their expertise links to other applications.Think Beyond Todays Jobs In mechanical and civil engineering, there are dozens of existing specializations graduates entering the workforce can explore. But Fasano suggests that the best approach is to look beyond what everyone else is already doing and focus on emerging areas with plenty of future growth potential. Infrastructure is a growth area right now, along with artificial intelligence and anything involving drones or software, he says. Candidates who can develop the right skills to meet these needs will be in high demand for years to come.Firms like Patricks arent just hiring engineers to do todays engineering. Theyre hiring engineers to be part of larger problem solving mechanisms for their cli ents. And youre only good at that if you understand the larger playing field and not just the little square that youre standing in, he says.Tim Sprinkle is an independent writer. You have to think about what you might be able to bring to the table that not every engineers going to have.Anthony Fasano, Engineering Management Institute

How to Contribute to a Positive Workplace

How to Contribute to a Positive WorkplaceHow to Contribute to a Positive WorkplaceHow to Contribute to a Positive WorkplaceHow can you contribute to a positive workplace? We break down why its so important. TWEETCreating happy and positive workplaces is one of the biggest challenges organizations face today. We know this because Chief Happiness Officer is now a job.Getting people aligned with a company vision, caring about it, and actually having fun doing it, is a huge undertaking, which is why the responsibility cant just rest on the Chief Happiness Officers plate, or the CEOs, or your bosss. Its just like a good party. A good party takes into account ambience, physical environment, guests, food, beverages, and favors. But what really makes a good party? The people The same theory applies to workplaces. What often keeps people in jobs? Their co-workers. With the right attitude, you have the power to create happiness at work, contributing to a positive work place, and to be the type of co-worker who encourages people to not only stay at their jobs, but enjoy them, too. Heres how 1. Show up.Woody Allen is quoted as saying, 80 percent of life is just showing up and the same goes for your workplace. What does it mean? It means more than physically attending work. Clocking in, clocking out, will not generate workplace happiness and a positive workplace. You need to be present. When were working in the now youre able to perceive opportunities that are invisible to (your) co-workers who miss out on the power of the now. And in fact, be more successful. Showing up means being open to the now and in the zone to process information without distilling it through the lens of the past or future. This act will help others lean in to what youre doing and encourage them to do the same.2. Join in.Dont resist the fun, seriously. A study out of Norway found that people who participated in cultural activities like joining a club reported lower levels of anxiety and depression as well as a higher quality of life. In most workplaces, especially in a positive workplace, there are community type activities from social committee, health and safety, volunteer, new hire buddies and more. The great thing about joining in is that not only will you have fun and make yourself happier at work, youll also be building out your personal brand in the process. Beyond that youll be leading by example and be able to encourage others to do the same. Think of it this way, if you have a workplace full of Joining-In types youll have a workplace thats going to satisfy you on more levels than just a paycheck. Joining in is like being the lighthouse to negative people. You do your thing, shine brightly, and soon others (especially those naysayer types) well come into the light, too, and join in. Its contagious.3. Speak up.If Joining In is being the lighthouse, then Speaking Up is being the flashlight. Most of the time being the lighthouse is the best way to influence those around yo u. Its the old, you catch more bees with honey than with vinegar story. Plus, when people come into the light on their own accord, its way more impactful for them. But then there are the times when you need to encourage them a little more directly. In a work environment, negative people are like mold, and there are times that call for you to protect yourself from the mold by speaking up. Speaking up means calling out unfair behaviour like bullying or harassment. Or, asserting yourself with a negative person and calling out their B.S. Using an assertive communication tactic, you can identify the behavior, what you want, and the impact, without feeling like its a full-blown confrontation. By doing this, youre influencing not only the parties involved but possibly the greater team, department and company. When we tolerate less bad behavior from others, we inspire others to do the same. If everyone speaks up for the type of work environment they want, it will lead to a more positive, ope n environment in the long run. Be certain to speak up with diplomacy, grace, and facts. Leave the emotion on the doorstep.4. Become engaged. You might think I mean flipping on a switch and activating your Employee Engagement button, but I dont. Or, I do. Being engaged with something is a choice. If you disagree, stop reading now. You might be thinking, hey, thats HRs job Or, thats my bosss job And youre right, too. The way I see it is this HR Management can create an environment in which employees can choose to be motivated. So, take a look at the company. Examine where theyre headed and why, and consider if youre behind it. Are you a believer in the Vision? Sure, youll have questions like, is that the right boss for the job? Or, will the market respond? But putting that lightly aside, can you get behind it? If you can get behind it, you will be happier at work. Your engagement also goes beyond Mission and Vision. If youre happier, youll be shining bright and its a lot easier for ot hers to follow your lead of positivity than to (continue) sulking.5. Be a leader. You do not need a big title to be a leader. Whether youre entry-level or an executive, you can evoke change from where you stand. It might not be earth shattering change, but you can make someones work experience better. Whether its becoming friends with someone and having someone to eat lunch with or brightening up someones day by recognizing them for a job well done, it is all of our jobs to generate team spirit and strengthen company culture. By sharing kudos, high-fives, and being positive in the face of adversity, you will be the kind of person everyone wants on their team - the Lighthouse person. The person whose light shines so brightly that soon enough everyone will be basking in it. Our emotions are all a matter of energy. If were negative, its like mold. Itll fester, grow, and spread. If were positive, itll shine bright. Others will seek out its warmth. By choosing to do something about your w ork environment, youre choosing to make at least one person happier you. And think of it this way, in a worst case scenario, epic failure of attempts, youll only reach one person with your attempts. If you can make one persons work experience better, would you do it?Need help with your resume? Take advantage of our free critique today

5 work-life balance asks to request instead of a raise

5 work-life balance asks to request instead of a raise5 work-life balance asks to request instead of a raiseWhen most professionals consider the goal of review season, their first instinct is to chase after more zeroes on their paycheck. A higher salary is most leidably associated with success - after all, as you climb the ladder, you expect to be compensated for your ascent. But as career and branding expert Wendi Weiner explains, sometimes a raise may not be in the future due to time or budget constraints. While unfortunate and disappointing, you shouldnt just throw in your hand and wave a white flag in defeat. Instead of only strategizing for monetary gains, professionals are encouraged to chase after a different schrift of satisfaction balance Whether you are seeking new employment and bargaining the terms of your hire or youre discussing your trajectory at your current company, there are plenty of asks to make that make your life - in and outside of the office - that much happ ier. Here, some worth fighting forProfessional development opportunitiesMaybe you arent currently eligible for an uptick in your take-home pay, but an investment in your skills are in the cards. Weiner suggests approaching your manager to see if he/she would help fund a new professional certification to help enhance your training or education. This might be a leadership course or technical class at a local college, a mini MBA - or a full one. Its an ask plenty of savvy workers are starting to bargain for, according to Weiner. If your business is lean and doesnt have the funds to support, dont fret.Weiner notes there are other routes Consider also obtaining additional training by attending workshops, seminars, and other conferences to ramp up your skills and knowledge and see if your boss will help get you thereby supporting the financial aspects of it.Remote workTo save on the high cost of office space and to attune to the new digital landscape that makes working from anywhere not on ly realistic but effective - it isnt unreasonable to approach your boss about remote work. Even if you only shoot for a work-remotely Friday situation or the option to be away from your desk three times a month of your choice, business coach Christine Argo says its a smart idea. Not only will this give you the freedom to set your own work hours - as long as you are available when you are needed - it will also reduce your commuting expenses, whether thats subway fare, train or gas, and tolls and in the end, can actually give you more time to work, because you cut out the travel time, she continues.Start-up fundsIf you happen to be in the entrepreneur world, your CEO will likely be open-minded to your own forward-thinking aspirations. When your manager isnt able to meet your salary requirements, explain other ways to fulfill and further your career at the company by illustrating your desire to start something of your own. Professor Dr. Wendy Osefo says that while this request is oft en seen in academic or research fields, it is making its way to other industries.Start-up funding is when the employer gives the employee and specified amount of money to spend towards developing and or launching an outside venture, she explains. This allows for you the employee to spend time developing a project you are passionate about with both the financial and creative capital of your employer.mora paid time offEuropeans are flabbergasted by the lack of paid time off for American workers and for good reason there are no required out-of-office days by the government. Rather, it is fully up to the employer to decide whats fair. If youre feeling cheated by finances, Weiner urges professionals to make a case for more PTO.Approach your boss and negotiate additional perks that may include reimbursement for extra days off for that vacation you have been longing to take, she says.If youve been with your company for more than a few years, its appropriate to try for more than just a day or two. Weiner says to go for another week.Wellness at workMaybe your boss cant give you a larger income, but can they contribute to your health? Argo says they sure can if you defend the need for wellness programs. Whether a joga class, healthy snacks in the office or all of the above, come prepared with easy-to-implement solutions.Maybe that empty box room could have some workout equipment. Maybe lunchtime and after work, they could bring in a yoga teacher or meditation expert to help support not only your well-being but everyones, she explains. If you need proof, Argo reminds there are plenty of studies that demonstrate the positive effects these activities have on productivity and workplace satisfaction.

Montgomery GI Bill for Members of Selected Reserves

Montgomery GI Bill for Members of Selected ReservesMontgomery GI Bill for Members of Selected ReservesThe good news is, unlike the Active Duty Montgomery G.I. Bill (ADMGIB), to participate in the Selective Reserves Montgomery G.I. Bill (SRMGIB), one does elend have their pay reduced by $100 per month for the first 12 months of service. Also, one can begin using benefits immediately after IADT (Initial Active Duty for Training), which normally means right after completing basic training and military job training school. The bad news is that the SRMGIB pays much, much less in education benefits. The SRMGIB pays a total of $11,844 worth of education benefits, compared to total benefits of more than $47,000 for the active duty program. Like the ADMGIB, the SRMGIB is not managed by the individual services. The program is managed by the Veterans Administration (VA), under laws enacted by Congress. The program is for members of the Selected Reserve of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps , and Coast Guard, and the Air and Army National Guard. Selected Reserves means those individuals who are drilling a minimum of one weekend per month, and two weeks per year (so, it doesnt include the inactive reserves, who dont drill). Eligibility You are eligible for the SRMGIB if you meet the following requirements Six-year selected reserve obligation You must have a six-year obligation to serve in the Selected Reserve. If youre an officer, you must agree to serve six years in addition to your current obligation.Complete your IADT (Initial Active Duty for Training) In most cases, this means basic training and military job training school.Maintain selected reserve position Serve in a drilling Selected Reserve unit and remain in good standing.Completed high school You must have obtained a high school diploma or equivalency certificate before you apply for benefits. Completing 12 hours toward a college degree before you apply for benefits also meets this requirement. Restric tions ROTC scholarship You cant be eligible for SRMGIB if youre receiving financial assistance through the Senior ROTC program. Interestingly, however, while federal law prohibits ADMGIB benefits for those who receive a commission through a service academy, there are no such restrictions under the law for the SRMGIB.AGR status If you enter Active Guard and Reserve (AGR) status, your eligibility for MGIB SR will be suspended. You may be eligible for MGIB AD. You may resume MGIB SR eligibility after your AGR status ends. Federal active duty Under some active duty enlistment programs, part of the credit for obtaining the ADMGIB is based on continuing service (after active duty) in the Selected Reserves. If your active duty enlistment falls under one of these programs, you arent eligible for the SRMGIB. Your Reserve or Guard component makes decisions about your eligibility. VA doesnt have authority under the law to make or reverse eligibility determinations. If your eligibility stat us is corrected, VA will pay benefits for periods when you were eligible. Expiration of Benefits The SRMGIB used to expire 14 years after one became eligible, or upon discharge from the Selected Reserves, whichever occurred first. However, this has been changed by the FY 2008 Defense Authorization Act. MGIB benefits now expire 10 years after honorable discharge from the Selected Reserves. Note Congress has made significant enhancements to the GI Bill for military members (active duty, Guard, and Reserves) with post-9/11 active duty service. Rates The VA uses the term entitlement to mean the number of months of benefits you may receive. Under the ADMGIB, one is entitled to 36 months worth of full-time benefits. Therefore, to find the maximum entitlement, one takes the maximum monthly payment and multiplies it by 36. Full-time student $329.00 per month3/4-time student $246.00 per monthHalf-time student $163.00Less than 1/2 time $82.25 The above rates would be paid until your e ntire entitlement ($11,844) is used. In other words, full-time students would receive 329.00 per month for up to 36 months, 1/2-time students would receive $246.00 per month for up to 72 months, etc. Full time generally means taking at least 12 credit hours in a term or 24 clock hours per week. 3/4 time generally means taking at least 9 credit hours in a term or 18 clock hours per week. Half time generally means taking at least 6 credit hours in a term or 12 clock hours per week. For approved programs in college and vocational or technical schools, basic payments are monthly and the rates are based on your training time. For on-the-job training (OJT) andapprenticeship programs, rates are monthly and based on your length of time in the program. Your MGIB rates decrease as your wages increase according to an approved wage schedule. For correspondence courses, you receive 55 percent of the approved charges for the course. For flight training, you receive 60 percent of the approved char ges for the course. The basic monthly rates increase October 1 every year with the Consumer Price Index (CPI) increase. They may increase at other times by an act of Congress. 5 Things Your LGBTQ Co-Workers Wish You Knew - The muse

5 Things Your LGBTQ Co-Workers Wish You Knew - The muse 5 Things Your LGBTQ Co-Workers Wish You Knew Scenario: You’re eating your Sunday dinner leftovers at lunch Monday with co-workers when one of your colleagues starts chatting about her dating life (or lack thereof). “Men are so confusing. I wish I was a lesbian,” she says, turning to look at you. “You guys have it so easy!” And suddenly, what was just a mundane conversation about everyone’s weekend turns into a conversation that inadvertently puts you in the hot seat. It’s seemingly inoffensive conversations like this that inspired me to get so involved in the queer community. After I came out freshman year of college, I eagerly joined LGBTQ meetups on campus learning as much as I could. Later I’d become a queer leader on campus, getting a minor in LGBTQ Studies and helping with campus trainings on more inclusive language to create safe spaces. A 2011 study reported that 3.8% of the total U.S. adult population identified as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender. The study stated, “This implies that there are approximately 9 million LGBT Americans, a figure roughly equivalent to the population of New Jersey,” and an even newer study showed that 7% of Millennials identify within the LGBTQ community. If numbers aren’t your thing, I’ll cut to the chase: We’re everywhere. We could be your hiring manager, your desk neighbor, or even your boss. Almost every time I’ve called co-workers out for saying something offensive, they are usually embarrassed, but also eager to make sure it doesn’t happen again. (We won’t talk about the times when it doesn’t go that way today, because that’s another article.) What I’ve learned from these discussions is that there’s a knowledge gap- and that filling it in could help avoid these moments from happening. On that note, here are five things your LGBTQ co-workers wish everyone else in the office knew. 1. Not All of Us Use Labels Some folks have “Coming Out” parties and call themselves gay, lesbian, bisexual, or anything else they’d like! If that’s the case, they’ll let you know what they identify as when the opportunity arises. Others don’t like labels (begins to raise hand). They might be questioning, and they also might be 100% OK with not identifying as anything. How are you supposed to know whether or not someone wants to identify a certain way? You’re not! Like any other personal detail, it’s entirely up to your co-worker to decide what to share and with whom. If you need to reference someone without using their name, you can privately ask what pronoun they prefer. No, it’s really as simple as asking, “Hey, what pronoun do you prefer?” It’s hard to not want to categorize someone right away, but trust that your colleague will tell you exactly how much they want you to know or what they identify as (if anything at all!). 2. We’re Not “Out” to Everyone in the Office If someone decides to come out to you, it’s probably because you’re awesome and you listen. Chances are they trust you (a lot), but they don’t feel the same way about everyone in the office. Plus, it’s a sensitive subject because for as long as people have worked, they’ve lost their jobs or been rejected for openings simply because they’re queer. So how do you find out who your LGBTQ co-worker told or not? You don’t! (See a pattern here?) It’s non-essential information to your normal working relationships. In the same way that you’d never casually mention to your colleague that another co-worker is pregnant, you wouldn’t slip on someone’s sexuality or gender identity. 3. We Don’t Want You to Play Matchmaker You might think, “Hey, it’s hard dating. Let me set these two lesbians up.” However, this is like finding out a co-worker was on Tinder and you responding, “OMG, I know someone who’s on Tinder! You two would totally hit it off.” Just because two people you know have one thing in common, doesn’t mean they’d be a match. Yes, there are fewer people we can date, but that doesn’t mean we don’t have standards in personality type, values, and everything else you care about, too. In the same way you wouldn’t introduce your friend to your co-worker, “This is John. He’s straight just like you, so you guys should talk!”- you wouldn’t set up two queer folks just because they’re queer. Chances are your co-workers don’t want to talk about their dating lives at work if they’re not already doing it, and plus, matchmaking’s a full-time job and you have one already. (If you don’t, check out our 10,000 open jobs here.) 4. The Questions You Ask Can Be Really Hurtful I’ll give you a couple: “What’s your type?” “So is it a he or a she?” “So who’s the guy and who’s the girl?” What sucks most about these is that all of them are a result of simply not knowing. We live in a pretty black and white society. You’re either straight or you’re gay, you’re either a woman or a man- but the truth is there’s so much more beyond that. Some of us live in the grey and others travel through the grey. Let me explain: Who you crushed on when you were in high school is most likely different than who you’d date today (unless you’re with your high-school crush, and if that’s the case, props for surviving the worst years together). Regardless, you evolve, learn, and adapt to what you like- and that’s just us being human. Often times, answers to these questions don’t exist. Maybe people told us that we are supposed to be a woman, but we don’t want to be a woman, so we change, adapt, and grow. Maybe both of us have dominant personalities and we’re a powerhouse couple with no gender roles attached. We’re changing your expectations of how humans look and act based off preconceived notions about gender. We’re changing the dynamic of romantic relationships should look like because our stories haven’t been written yet. This has to be said point blank, though: The (pretty common) question “I’m not gay, but if I was, would you want to hook up with me?” always kills me. The equivalent would be your boss saying, “Alright, you’re married, but if you weren’t would you sleep with me?” It’s totally inappropriate (HR calls it sexual harassment) and can be completely avoidable! You might be asking, “What questions can I ask then?” I’d suggest checking out sites like TheSafeZoneProject for terminology, PFLAG a website for families and friends of LGBTQAIP people, or GLAAD, an organization devoted to shaping conversations about LGBT folks. 5. Keep it Professional So, you just learned all this information. What should you do next? Try setting up your co-worker with your cousin who one time kissed a girl? Go above and beyond in asking if your colleague met any cute boys this weekend- after asking everyone else “How was your weekend?” No to all of the above. Treat this person as you always have- like your co-worker. (Unless, of course, you’ve just discovered you were being offensive; if that’s the case, change everything.) Now that you’ve got a better understanding of what not to do, you might decide it’s a good idea to go back and apologize for any offensive things you might’ve said. Or, you can move forward knowing all of this and simply choose to keep your interactions professional (as they always should be). Now, this is of course a very high-level overview of the things that you, as our straight cis-gender counterparts should avoid- but there are more things you can do to become an ally and help create safe spaces for some pretty fantastic people. And above all else, remember: This is our place of work so, please, be mindful and be respectful. Photo of co-workers courtesy of Klaus Vedfelt/Getty Images.

How to Become a Creative Director at a Top Ad Agency

How to Become a Creative Director at a Top Ad Agency How to Become a Creative Director at a Top Ad Agency In order to shed some light on the steps you have to take to become a creative director at a top ad agency, the qualities and skills creative directors need to succeed, and the best and worst things about the job, Vault recently spoke with Shawn Gauthier, a Los Angeles-based creative director and copywriter  with more than two decades of advertising  experience. VAULT: What did you study in school? GAUTHIER: I graduated from Emerson College in Boston. I majored in advertising and minored in creative writing. The two choices that most prepared me for a career in advertising, however, were joining my college comedy troupe and spending a semester abroad traveling throughout Europe. VAULT: What got you interested in advertising, and in being a writer/creative director? GAUTHIER:  Since eighth grade, I knew I wanted to go into advertising. I loved arguing and I loved creative writing. So, even as a 12-year-old I somehow knew that advertising was what I wanted to do. VAULT:  Describe what you do in your job. GAUTHIER:  Simply put, the most essential part of my job is concepting. (Even though my spell check denies that concepting is even a word.) Nonetheless, when a client wants to express X, I figure out the quickest, sharpest, most memorable way to convey X to consumers. Sometimes it’s with headlines. Often, it’s with pictures. After conceiving the idea, I have to present it to the client, convince the client to buy the idea and then bring the idea to life. For a TV ad, this involves writing the script, choosing a director, casting actors, choosing a set, wardrobe, music, and finding an editor. As a creative director, I also manage teams of copywriters and art directors as they conceive concepts. VAULT:  What knowledge and skills are essential for the job? GAUTHIER:  Resilience is probably the most essential trait to survive in advertising. Great work is killed on a daily basis. You need to let work die, get up and start the creative process all over again. Another quality, and one of my favorite words, is “sprachgefuhl,” which means a feel for language. People with sprachgefuhl have a knack for the subtle differences in word meanings and how words best flow together. When people are first starting to write headlines, I find that they often write what feels like a parody of advertising. The smartest writers I know write the way people talk. The best ads don’t feel like ads. They seem like stories or shared morsels of wisdom. VAULT:  What do you like most about the work? What is most challenging? GAUTHIER:  Every good day is filled with the thrill of solving an impossible puzzle. It is incredibly rewarding to craft a headline or write a TV or radio commercial that makes someone laugh (or even nod approvingly). To create something that has never before existed is very fulfilling. And, the six greatest words an advertising creative can hear from fellow creatives is, “I wish I’d thought of that.” The most challenging part of the job is enduring the many, many, many times the ideas that you’ve created will die. Also, consider this: if you work on, say, a car account and you need to express “our car is the best,” it’s staggering to think that for the past 100 years, thousands of creative people all over the world have been working every day on thousands of different cars trying to express the idea that “our car is the best.” Somehow,  you  have to be the one that does it in a way that no one ever has before. That’s hard. VAULT:  What was the most interesting project you’ve worked on, or what did you work on that you’re most proud of? GAUTHIER:  I’ve worked on everything from cars to moist toilet tissue. I’ve written for hotels, dish soap, beer, coffee, airlines, deodorant, and Pillsbury Toaster Strudel. I find something entirely new and interesting about every project I delve into. For a brief moment, you become an expert on whatever you are focused on so you learn new things about new things every year. Heineken was one of my most interesting clients. It’s illegal to show someone drinking alcohol in a commercial. It’s illegal to use cartoon characters or Santa Claus. You have to talk about drinking without ever, ever implying anything about getting drunk. The limitations are fascinating. And, ultimately, working on Heineken, I wrote my favorite commercial. It featured a priest, a nun, and a rabbi, Satan, a midget, a blind guy, three Polish guys, a blonde, a brunette, and a redhead, and a horse- all walking into a bar. To this day, I feel lucky and ecstatic that I am the one who first thought to do that i n a beer commercial. VAULT:  What advice would you give to someone who’s thinking about doing this for a living? GAUTHIER:  Start a collection of ads that blow you away. Aim to create work of the same caliber. Take a class at a portfolio school. Building a solid portfolio is the best way to break in to the ad biz. Share anything else that you think readers would want to know about the job and advertising biz in general. The best way to make money in the business is to create something awesome, get noticed and switch agencies. If you can find an agency that feels like a family, know that that is a very rare and very good thing. And lastly, if you get a job in advertising, know that your mom and your friends will always offer to help you work on projects; and then they will quit trying after about two minutes. Power Rangers Creator Inspires Office Productivity iPad App

Power Rangers Creator Inspires Office Productivity iPad App Power Rangers Creator Inspires Office Productivity iPad App Interactions between an executive and an assistant using the program are intended to be a simple exchange of button presses, with one end sending a message and the other end replying with the push of one of the pre-defined buttons. The idea is to keep these interactions as undetectable as possible. Longer text messages are also possible with Office Bleepster for communications requiring further specificity. Through this functionality, Office Bleepster avoids jarring interruptions, provides fast and secure messaging, and reduces the time necessary to exchange information. Each user of the program is assigned as either an “executive” or an “assistant” and is presented with a screen that is relevant to that role. Office Bleepster is designed to primarily function within Bluetooth range but also accommodates usage on a Wi-Fi network. Creator of Office Bleepster, Paul Brooks, comments on the inspiration behind the creation of the app, “During several days in his office, negotiating a deal for a kids animated television series, I was amazed at how effectively Haim handled routine phone and office interruptions, Brooks explains. He was an orchestra conductor in his office, seamlessly dealing with multiple issues and dynamics at a very high level and that really became the inspiration to develop Office Bleepster, Brooks continues. Behind Haims magic was a series of amazing electronic devices on his desk that allowed him to quietly interact with his assistants. If he wanted coffee, it magically appeared! If our meeting was over, an assistant entered the office to explain that Haim was needed in another meeting,

The ALJ Structured Interview

The ALJ Structured Interview The ALJ Structured Interview The ALJ Structured Interview The U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) has begun to notify candidates from the 2016 Administrative Law Judge (ALJ) applicant pool that their online testing scores were high enough to merit an invitation  to Washington, DC to participate in the final round of testing, including the Structured Interview. The testing begins on with a Logic-Based Measurement Test and a Written Demonstration (both proctored). On the second day, the Structured Interview is conducted, during which candidates are asked a set of predetermined questions by a panel of three federal ALJs. How does one prepare for an interview and written testing whose questions are closely guarded, especially when all candidates are sworn to secrecy about the process? First, by exploring the 13 competencies essential to the ALJ evaluation process. Second, by exploring the fundamentals of quality ALJ decision writing. Third, by reading materials available from other agencies that administer Logic-Based Measurement Tests to candidates in their selection process. And perhaps most importantly, by understanding what the federal Structured Interview is all about. Like all federal structured interviews, the ALJ interview questions are decided upon in advance and the answers are scored. Questions are designed to create a level playing field: internal and external candidates with equivalent skills should be able to provide answers of the same quality. The interview will include open-ended questions; it will also be “behavior-based,” in that candidates will be asked to elaborate on various past situations where they were called upon to solve problems similar to those an ALJ may face. There may be hypothetical questions. There may be one or more questions designed to test your knowledge of what makes a good federal ALJ. Most importantly, the Structured Interview will be “performance-based,” giving you the opportunity to highlight aspects of your accomplishments most likely predictive of your future performance as an ALJ, covering a candidate’s level of maturity when it comes to people skills, judicial decision making, and temperament- su bjects difficult to assess except by in-person questioning . The Resume Place has helped thousands of applicants navigate the federal selection process, including the Structured Interview. We’ve received positive feedback from customers prepped for judicial interviews, including Administrative Patent Judges, Administrative Judges, Hearing Officers, and Administrative Law Judges. If you would like help with your interview skills, The Resume Place can help. In two 75-minute sessions, conducted by an AV-Preeminent ® rated, experienced federal trial lawyer, you will learn the basics of structured interviews, and receive materials designed to help you address a range of questions that may be asked in the ALJ interview. The second session includes a recorded mock interview, which is critiqued and downloadable as an mp3 file once the session concludes. Those who purchase services will receive our own written resources on performance-based, structured interviews, our proprietary ALJ competencies worksheet (to help you plan and practice answers for likely interview questions), and a list of links to other useful references for your in-person assessment and proctored exam. Even if your phones turned off, its nearby presence is distracting you

Even if your phone's turned off, its nearby presence is distracting you Even if your phone's turned off, its nearby presence is distracting you Turns out, putting your phone down in front of you will not help you escape its distracting siren’s call.According to  new research  in the Journal of the Association for Consumer Research,  our phone’s mere presence is enough to wreak havoc on our ability to think. Why you don’t want to leave your phone on your deskTo test this, marketing and decision science researchers recruited nearly 800 people to complete tasks on their cognitive thinking skills in two experiments. Participants were all told to turn their phones completely silent so that no vibration or pinging noise would distract them. They were also told to either place their phone on the desk in front of them, keep their phones in their pocket, or put them in another room. The location of the phone had an outsized effect on participants’ ability to reason and remember. Even though participants were not actively checking their phones, the phone’s nearby presence was unconsciously distracting participants. The presenc e of a nearby phone led to a lower working memory capacity and reduced functional fluid intelligence. The participants who had their phones in front of them on a desk performed the worst on cognitive tests, followed by those who kept their phones in their pockets. The top performers were the ones who banished their phones to a separate room. The researchers called this phenomenon a “smartphone-induced ‘brain drain.’ ” Our brains only have so much room to multitask and remember. When we do not let our phones leave our sides, its constant companionship takes away a small but significant part of our attention, leaving fewer mental resources for us to think.“Merely having their smartphones out on the desk led to a small but statistically significant impairment of individuals’ cognitive capacity - on par with effects of  lacking sleep,” researchers told Harvard Business Review. That’s right, your phone’s presence can cause the same cognitive deficits as sleeplessness.  T his finding is a warning that just putting your phone down is not going to be enough - we need to be physically parted from our addictive devices if we don’t want to become sleepless zombies. To stop phone ‘brain drain,’ you need to separate yourself from your phoneTo stop your phone from affecting your ability to think clearly, the researchers had a radical yet simple solution: make time to be physically away from it. Putting your phone facedown or turning it off did not stop the “brain drain” effect. Our phones needed to be physically away from our presence to make an impact.“Defined and protected periods of separation … may allow consumers to perform better not just by reducing interruptions but also by increasing available cognitive capacity,” the study concluded.

To become a leader, learn to shut up

To become a leader, learn to shut up To become a leader, learn to shut up As executives  move up the ranks, more people pat their backs, and less people give them unfiltered real talk.Employees can become too aware of the boss’ power and privilege, telling CEOs what they want to hear and becoming fearful of telling them about  actual failures. CEOs can get cocooned  by yes-women and yes-men giving them only good news. That’s a big problem. Without all the right information, CEOs can’t make the necessary  directional changes needed to guide the company. This cocoon of good feelings is what the latest issue of Harvard Business Review tackles in an illuminating story called “Bursting the CEO Bubble.” HBR interviewed 200 top executives to figure out how they could learn what  U.S. defense secretary  Donald Rumsfeld famously coined, “unknown unknowns.”The first and hardest step: become humble. For top executives to succeed, HBR says they need to leave the spaces of power that they’ve been striving for all their careers: “To  do what your exalted position demands, you must in some way escape your exalted position.”Talk less, ask moreTo get one’s employees to give you the right answers, you need to start asking them the right questions. The framing of the questions is key.The CEO of Charles Schwab,  Walt Bettinger, regularly checks in with  employees, owners, analysts, and clients, and he’ll make a point to ask them, “if you were in my job, what would you be focusing on?” It’s designed to make it less about him, and more about them, so they are more likely to volunteer their real opinions.  Bettinger will also publicly admit in these meetings that his hardest challenge as CEO is his isolation and he needs help. And Bettinger  makes relevant information, both good and bad, pay off. Certain employees who bring Bettinger useful information get flown out to spend a day at Charles Schwab’s San Francisco headquarters as a public signal to further encourage these good feedback loops.Leave the officeThe worst way you can find out that your company has been operating on misguided assumptions is…watching your competitors capitalize on them.If you don’t want that to happen, you need to find the people on the ground, who notice early signs of trouble. That means leaving your cocoon, because those observant employees are rarely sitting in the corner office.HBR offers an example: Fadi Ghandour, the co-founder of the Dubai-based delivery firm Aramex, took  one of the company’s couriers because he wanted to find out how Aramex was directly affecting them. He asked his courier questions about the job, and outside of the executive comfort zone, the courier was able to get  real and tell  Ghandour that he was being overloaded with work and that managers were acting out of touch. Ghandour immediately called an all-hands meeting with management and some couriers. He didn’t make the meeting a witch hunt where people were called out, but rather, a meeting of “mutual discovering” of how workflows could improve. As a result of that encounter, all Aramex executives must do stints as couriers.Make failure acceptableOne of the core characteristics of good teams: employees feel safe in failing, so that not every mistake becomes an attack on their job security.Encouraging failure means encouraging creativity and new thinking, so it means letting go of your ego and becoming honest with how little you, as a leader, may know.As Ed Catmull,  the president of Pixar and Disney Animation Studios, puts it,  â€œto be wrong as fast as you can is to sign up for aggressive, rapid learning.” At orientations for new employees, Catmull tells them right off the bat that neither he nor the company has all the right answers. The founder and CEO of Spanx, Sara Blakely, makes failure acceptable by talking about her own. In a recent companywide meeting, she held a celebratory moratorium on her “oops” moments that she’d personally made with  Spanx.Be  quieter so  you can be a better listenerFor CEOs who need to shake hands, fundraise, TED Talk and broadcast words of authority in most of their interactions, being quiet is not their default. But making space for those quieter moments is critical for good listening.Being quiet for a while displays generosity - a key leadership trait - that lets other people express themselves and have a stake in the conversation. Everyone already knows you’re important, because you have the title. Let someone else have the floor and see what you can learn from them. The president of RD at Calico,  Hal Barron, explains that listening means not just waiting to hear “the story in your head” because you shouldn’t know what the story is yet. If you’re talking, as the saying goes, you’re not learning.  For Cirque du Soleil’s co-founder  Guy  Laliberté, this means not stopping brainstorming sessions. When others in a meeting are skeptical of someone’s wild ideas, he’s the one in the meeting who encourages them to keep talking. That encouragement is the kind of mantra Simon Mulcahy, a Salesforce top executive, repeats to himself in meetings, ‘Don’t tell. Ask questions. Don’t tell. Ask questions.’Anyone can do thisBottom line? These actions are all doable. HBR’s advice is not just for CEOs but every kind of leader: “get out of the office today and spend more time being wrong, being uncomfortable, and being quiet.”

Choosing a Career When Youre Interested in Everything

Choosing a Career When You're Interested in Everything Choosing a Career When You're Interested in Everything For many young adults, entering the workforce can be jarring. Throughout your life, you’ve been told the importance of becoming a well-rounded individual. So you tried different activities, studied various subjects, and developed a wide variety of interests. Then you have to pick a career path. Suddenly, it feels like you need to pick between your love of technology or art; politics or cooking. You have to decide what will be your career and what will be demoted to a weekend hobby. Or do you? There will be tough decisions. Some interests will have to take priority over others. But if you’re smart in your choices, it is possible to find a flexible career path that doesn’t confine you to a suffocating box. You just have to take some time to explore all of the options open to you. Here’s how to choose a career when you’re interested in more than one thing: Figure Out What You Cant Live Without Doing A Gallup survey found that among employees who had been with their company for more than three months, 60 percent stayed because their job allowed them to do what they do best. That factor had an even bigger impact on employees’ satisfaction than having an increased income. Why is that? It’s simple- people are happier when they get to go into work every day and do what they were meant to do. The trick is figuring out what your calling is. The first step in that process is thinking about what makes a dull task more bearable for you. For example, imagine that you had to spend an entire day cleaning: Would it seem less odious if you could work with a team? Or if you had to solve riddles to correctly identify the cleaning products you needed? Your answer to these questions will help you get to the core of what you need out of a career. To dig deeper into what motivates you, consider taking online personality assessments or using career exploration apps. You might be surprised by what they reveal about you and how they help you narrow down your options. Find an Industry That Interests You Your education does make it easier- or more difficult- to get certain types of jobs, but it doesn’t completely limit the industries you have to work in. If you majored in biology, you’re not restricted to just medical or scientific fields. If you’ve taken classes in computer programming, that doesn’t mean you have to get a job in the tech industry. Many of your skills are transferable from one industry to another. A Burning Glass study found that research skills were ranked in the top 10 most important skills for various industries, ranging from marketing and PR to healthcare and IT. Look into a variety of industries and find out which  skills are most important in them. Think outside the box and consider what your unique experience can bring to an industry. For example, say you’ve always loved music, but are tone deaf. Instead of learning the guitar, you studied web design. You can always embrace your interest in music and use your skills by designing websites for bands or record labels. Look for Organizations That Embrace Collaboration Whatever career you choose, chances are its responsibilities and duties won’t satisfy each and every one of your interests. That’s just the way of the world. But that doesn’t mean you need to be locked away, never interacting with people from other departments ever again. An organization that encourages cross-departmental projects and collaboration can enable you to be exposed to other things, even if they’re not part of your job. If your job is in sales, for instance, you can work with members of the design and marketing teams while creating literature on your products. Or with programmers to create a new purchasing page for the website. Truly collaborative organizations offer you fluidity in your role. Of course, you’ll still have your designated duties, but you should have opportunities to engage in a range of related activities as well. When considering which company you’d like to work for, reach out to current employees and ask them how teamwork is actually practiced in the office. Find out how cross-departmental projects are structured to see how involved an employee can be with different aspects of the process. Focus on Organizations With Career Development As someone who is interested in many different things, chances are you won’t be satisfied unless you can continually experience new things and learn new skills. That means you’ll need an organization that supports career development. And just because a job seems like a great fit right now, that doesn’t mean it will continue to fit in the future. What will make the difference in your long-term happiness is how well the organization supports your curiosity. When researching employment opportunities, find out how a company approaches training and development. Do they put all employees through the same generic training and rote distribution of responsibilities? Or do they allow employees to choose what they learn and explore skills and duties not directly related to their current position? If you don’t feel like you’ll have the chance to continue exploring different interests, chances are it’s not the right place for you. Take the Time to Consider Your Options Being a well-rounded person is never a bad thing. But it can make it difficult to define the right career path. As long as you take the time to look at all your options, you’ll see that you can find a career that satisfies your desire for multi-dimensional work, instead of pigeonholing you into one role for your entire career. - Alex Li is a co-founder of PathSourceâ€"â€"a comprehensive online career exploration tool that allows users to discover informational interviews on video about a wide range of jobs and career paths.
